TOHU - The Adventures of Cubicle Girl review friv game

On January 28th point&click adventure TOHU was released on PC and consoles. We tell you what to expect from this cute online game from the developer Friv2Online.

Somewhere in a distant world among the clouds hanging fish planets, on which live very strange creatures. Among them is the protagonist of the friv game TOHU, Girl, who can turn into a mechanical Cube at will.

One day in the serene everyday life of the inhabitants of a wonderful world broke into a mysterious villain who began to destroy the Sacred Engine, which supports the heavenly islands. The girl stood up to defend her native land, and where this adventure will lead her and who will be the villain, you will find out for yourself. I won't spoiler, I'll only note that not everything here is unambiguous, and in the finale the story will turn upside down.

As mentioned above, the heroine turns into a mighty robot, which is what many TOHU puzzles are based on. The girl is small and dexterous, she is able to get through narrow tunnels and climb on various objects. The cube, in turn, can lift something heavy or compete in arm wrestling.
To cope with the challenges, you need not only strength and agility, but also wit. Of course, TOHU is no match for complex quests like Cradle or Syberia: there aren't as many rooms, a minimum of items, and there aren't even any unification mechanics! Nevertheless, there are some episodes in the game that will make you think hard. And separately I was pleased with a variation on the classic goat, wolf and cabbage problem - simple, but pleasant.

"Peep" the solution of puzzles allows legal cheat - a small mini-game, passing which the player will receive a comic book, demonstrating the passage of the nearest test. However, a couple of times I still had to turn to the Internet for help - there are not so much complex as non-intuitive tasks, the logic of which is clear only to the developers of the friv game. Fortunately, there were few such moments, and for the most part I managed to enjoy the gameplay.
The visual style and musical accompaniment of TOHU were no less positive. The game is very cute, the characters are incredibly likable (especially the Girl), and the locations are full of detail. Composer Christopher Larkin, known for his work on Hollow Knight, was responsible for the soundtrack, and his music is captivating, so much so that I didn't even want to leave the levels where particularly beautiful melodies were playing.

Despite the charm of the friv game, some minuses are still worth noting. First of all, annoyingly long animations when performing the same type of actions, which cannot be rewound. Secondly, problems with character encoding in Russian localization (which is strange, because the credits are full of obviously Russian surnames), because of which one of the dialogues was unreadable.
Active items are not highlighted, so in each room you have to click on everything in a row not to miss something important. And it is worth mentioning the duration: if you know what to do, you can run through the campaign in two hours, if you don't know - in four.

However, the shortcomings of the project do not detract from its positive qualities. If you are looking for an interesting, cute cartoon tale for a couple of evenings, TOHU is what you need.
